Surprise at the Allianz Cloud: the run of Marta Ortega and Gemma Triay, the queens of the Foro Italico, is already over. The number 2 seed in Milano Premier Padel were beaten in the first round by the very young Carmen Goenaga (class of 2004) and Lucia Martinez Gomez, respectively number 21 and number 26 in the FIP ranking. It ended 6-2 6-4 in one hour and 24 minutes, with Goenaga/Garcia hugging each other on the court for a long time after the last point. Down 3-0 in the first set, Ortega/Triay bounced back but failed to complete the comeback.
And a break by Goenaga/Martinez also came in the opening of the second set: the world number 3 and 4 went up, but in the seventh game came the decisive stretch. “We played a great match, working together in training precisely for matches like this”, said Martinez. “Thank you Milan for supporting us”. continued Goenaga, a 19-year-old from Salamanca with a great future. “The emotion is great, but now we have to think about the next match”.
